When Is a Cough More Than Just a Cough?

By Dr. Sourabh Pandey · 19 April 2026 · 3 min read

Almost everyone coughs from time to time. The important question is whether the cough has features that suggest something more.

Duration

Under three weeks is usually acute and often infective. Three to eight weeks is subacute. Beyond eight weeks it is chronic and needs a systematic evaluation.

Associated features

Blood in sputum, fever, weight loss, night sweats, breathlessness, wheeze, hoarseness or chest pain all raise the priority of evaluation.

Context

Smoking history, occupational exposure, contact with a person with TB, or existing lung or heart disease change how a cough should be assessed.

The takeaway

If a cough is not settling, is disturbing sleep, or is accompanied by any warning feature, arrange a consultation with Dr. Sourabh Pandey rather than waiting it out.
